Negotiations for a new contract have nothing to do with our current fianacial situation. We signed a money losing contract with United. That was all Skywests' fault. Unless we all work for free, they will continue to lose money. If Skywest wants to turn XJT around, they need to negotiate a new contract with United.
Sure we will shrink no matter what. However distasteful everyone finds 50 seaters, there is still a niche market for them. There isn't a 500 aircraft market for them, but there is a market. We have 140 XR's at XJT. I doubt those will go anywhere anytime soon. Unless another regional can find about 1,700 guys to staff those, I'd say XJT won't be shutting their doors anytime soon.
With United's stunning Q1 loss, I doubt they will be ready to give SKW/XJT more money any time soon.
A JCBA will reduce costs for the company. There is no denying that.
As for staffing, I bet SkyWest gets at least 1700 applicants out of 4000 when they shut this place down. Look at all the Comair pilots who went to other regionals and started over.
