FWIW I think its absolutely fair to "grill" someone at an interview about a lower GPA. And its not that some people will have "excuses" but rather there are likely many cases where further inquiry would lead to a more approproate decision being made than just excluding someone based largely on that one metric.
Sorry, I never meant to imply that. Been a mil IP for almost a decade and a half, never seen a correlation between college brains and flying. I've seen MIT geniuses wash out of UPT and dudes with PE degrees from suspect schools mind meld with jets in a way that was akin to high art.

For the low GPA guys, I have two engineering degrees from name schools with decent GPAs and have heard exactly zip. Take heart, whatever the secret is--it ain't having a 3.0+ GPA. And I agree with you, judging someone's ability based on college GPA a decade or more after the fact seems utterly nonsensical to me.
