I was recently given a Telex 5x5 headset and I was wondering if it would work well in the CRJ-200. I have heard that the cockpit is too noisy for it and that I should have dual custom (deep impression) ear pieces made in order for it to work. From those who use the 5x5, are dual ear pieces necessary, or can I get away with one ear piece, and a foam ear plug in the other ear?

No experience with the headset itself but I can tell you that the flightdeck in the CRJ is not loud at all. It's not perfect silence but you certainly don't need any elaborate ear protection. Routinely take my headset off above 180 for the duration.
