It is a variety of factors. In no particular order, what I think accounts for it's relative seniority is:
  • Much more comfortable than the 737
  • The 737, MD88 and 717 fleets have been growing. The growth results in junior pilots bidding into the vacancies
I think as new jets start to arrive into that fleet it will become roughly equal to the 737. Frankly, the extra money the 737 pays probably is not worth the ergonomic trade-offs (YMMV)

My 112 pound wife went flying with me. As she sat in the Captain's seat she said "how do you guys fit in this thing" ... and she drives a Miata, wants a Lotus Elise ... she likes little cockpits ... hey wait! that's not how that was supposed to come out
