Taxiing to the gate could be the difference between life and death if a long taxi were involved.
Captains are also trained to assess the situation as to whether or not to have medical help meet the aircraft at runway rather than wasting taxi time to the gate.
I would think US carriers would provide the same training to their first officers.
I will say this: an autoland is a pretty bad idea on anything but conditions requiring one. They work ok... but when they fail, it is typically quite spectacular at a very low altitude. Leaving the autopilot until 200 feet or so? Sure.
