I was hired at the end of '07 and got the ER in NYC. That was before there was any domestic flying in the category at all and it was fantastic. I held a line right out of training. But then change happened. I finally got tired of reserve and trips to Georgetown so a few years ago I decided to bid over to the 73 and be a line holder again.
I'm also about an hour away from EWR and was really looking forward to the shorter drive and no bridge tolls. Crossing a bridge in NY is crazy expensive! But alas, change happened again and there are few EWR departures for the NYC 73 and I'm not senior enough to touch them. Now I fly a lot of the Caribbean turns from JFK which I like, even though they do make for a long day.
I think you're doing a good job trying to make the best decision you can based on the information you have available. Just realize one of the reasons Delta has been as successful as it has been lately is because they move the different airplanes in and out of markets. They work hard to get the capacity to match the demand. Good luck and welcome aboard!
