Any insight into either would be greatly appreciated!
Living in the city is a blast, but damn expensive if you have kids. I paid $2k/month for a tiny 1bd apartment in a nice area of Boston. Check the north shore of Boston along Rt-95 for some great towns with excellent school systems. From Topsfield north to Newburyport are all great.

Go west of Boston towards Worcester for some more affordable areas too.

NH is definitely cheaper, but you have to pay attention to the shool districts and property taxes. The state motto is "Live free or die" and they'll let you die! Invest in a generator and a good snowblower!
