It doesn't really make us any different from any other world power, either now or in historical times. The British Empire's expansion was largely financed/controlled/made possible by the British East India Company...and the same goes for all of the European empires of the time.

We just do a better job of pretending that this country isn't actually run by a corporate oligarchy. Sometimes the facade slips, though...
