I'm a runner, and trust me, a couple decades ago when I first started, you didn't go running back in the neighborhood around Woodward. Over the years the school has a done a good job of buying up all the distressed properties and gentrifying the area and now I have no problem running back there.
Virginia Ave isn't a war zone, but there have been a number of Pilots held up or had items stolen at the various training hotels. I wouldn't go wandering around off the beaten path at night and I'd keep a close eye on my valuables.
I would always go running by the training center then down past air cargo... daytime only, of course. That seemed quite safe as well... plus plenty of airplane watching to distract me from my huffing and puffing.
