Maybe they
were on tarmac! I think the DCA ramp used to be paved with that stuff. On a hot day, our Mad Dog threatened to sink like a Dire Wolf in the La Brea Tar Pit. We would force the nose wheel up a wooden ramp, or else the pax would have to pole vault to reach the jetway. Didn't need yellow lines to taxi, because the airplane would just follow the wheel ruts, like a wagon on the Oregon Trail.
