You are right and wrong. You're right that both pilots are responsible for the safety of the flight and that first year pay needs to at least be livable, however the left seat has a much larger responsibility for everything. His (or her) pay should be significantly higher.
But when the captain screws up I also get violated while making enough to qualify for food stamps and medicaid. Ok I propose that if you want to keep 60-70% higher wages than the hired help, then the captain should be the only one to get violations. Much larger responsibilities comes much larger consequences.
I do have a huge respect for the position and the people that can fill it well however there is a reason 2 of us are up there.
