All these AT confusion / incorrect mode scenarios put forth in just the last few posts simply reinforce my point. If you're going to fly the airplane then do so, if you want the automation to do it, then set it up that way and let it do it's thing. If you had the automation going and screws up revert to manual, sort it out later, we should (pronounced "must") all be capable of flying the aircraft by hand in any regime of flight. This halfway in between &@$* is laziness at best and lack of ability at worst.
If you can't cross an ocean and land the airplane with no hesitation with all the automatics shut off it may be time to reconsider your line of work.
