The whole probation thing is essentially a non-event for the professional aviators that are competitive for an interview. A pilot has to be truly "special" to not make it though probation, IMHO.
The very, very few that do not make it are well known because:
1) their antics are spectacular and/or very specific
2) it is so rare
I love the bit in the FOM about "Styles of Flying"..
"Spectacular or stunt flying in United equipment is strictly prohibited." I'll never be accused of spectacular landings, so I got that going for me. Which is nice.
