Mmmmmm.... pilot shortage sounds soooooooo good. We can't possibly staff properly at the 121 carrier that I work for. Seems that it is that way everywhere right now. Flight schools are tapped out of instructors. Minimums are going down. And that's right, nobody came back after the furloughs.
Shouldn't that be a bit of a warning? These pilots were furloughed and now work as car salesmen and mortgage brokers and yet 9 out of 10 choose NOT to come back.
What would you suppose would be the reason? Perhaps because working as a car salesmen is better? Maybe they earn more money? Whatever the reason it suggests that they have found a better life outside of aviation and one that is so superior that they would turn their back on UAL.
I spoke with a guy the other day who was laid off from UAL in 79 and never went back.
