Historically it was usually straight to the majors, but hiring is still ramping up and there is a "backlog" of eminently qualified applicants so many mil guys are not called right away.
In that case you need to stay current (and probably make money)....guard bum, bizav, special gov contract flying, or regionals are the typical options.
