He got hired at another major about 6 years ago now and had his class cancelled.

We're just curious as to what is getting people called. Most of the stuff I've read doesn't discuss flight times, aircraft, etc.

Their is no exact formula for getting an interview right now. Most of the civilians getting hired are from compass or endeavor for now and the rest seem to be military. So their is a very small # of guys getting hired from off the street with no military time or connections.
I'd say if you are 3.6 GPA or higher and went to a quality accredited school, got your degree in 4 years or less, have between 5,000 to 10,000 total time, have TPIC time, are an instructor or checkairman and an internal LOR then you have a highly competitive application.
None of these are absolutes and others have been hired outside of these quals but for the most part these should get you interview for now. It's extremely tough for anyone to get a interview right now especially when they have over 10,000 applications to choose from. No one knows what the exact formula to get an interview is and for good reason. Their are hundreds that have been hired and 1000's waiting to get hired that are more than qualified. It will just take time to get to everyone at this point.
