If it was a trip you
really wanted to fly, you could also put a yellow (high) slip in and forgo the X day, no extra pay. On rare occasions I've done this, usually to avoid an especially bad trip that I was sure to get on my first long call day. Some trips are so bad it's worth losing the X day.
