Pilots do live in different places (countries). Outside of the occasional towel that may be thrown in the ring by scheduling or travel you are responsible for being in your gateway city.

With that being said, if your gateway is further ($$$) than where you plan to live it should be easy. Guys do it. It's possible and they like it but I have heard of a few horror stories out there.

Bottom line is that you are responsible for getting into position from your gateway or fiscal equivalent.
