As a 141 instructor, I don't think I ever signed off a commercial student with more than 250 hours. The extra in Part 61 is mostly instrument and commercial XC.

Don't forget you can count 50 hours of sim time towards the 250, requiring only 200 hours in the plane for a commercial. Some aviation colleges allow students to use their sims at no charge.
