I know they will call around 7 the night before, but I thought they could re-assign you if there were open trips. I got one of those and thought I better figure out how the process works.
One of the pre contract 2012 LOE's eliminated all standby obligations for FO's removed from the trip for training. You will be paid for the trip and are free to WS or GS over those days as you see fit. You could also just go fishing!
