There are also places where they are a necessity as a high power (2,000W) NDB can be received over a distance of hundreds of miles, there are still charted airways over the Pacific which utilize NDBs scattered across those islands. I think there are also routes via Greenland which use them for those unable to utilize tracks.

I know of at least one instance of dual GPS failure 400 NM from land going to an tiny island, having the NBD was a good thing.
