As pilots we use public WiFi all the time (hotels, airports, cafes, etc.). You're taking a chance because your information is NOT secure. The fix is EASY....use a VPN. I got smart (I can give you horror stories from guys I fly with) and now the first thing I do when I login to WiFi on the road is Connect to my VPN server. The 4 or 5 bucks I spend per month is worth my peace of mind.
The added benefit to your PRIVACY and SECURITY is you can bypass firewalls (even in China, UAE, etc) and get your fill of Netflix, Skype or whatever else you want to do in the privacy of your own room!
If you're like me and have no clue what a VPN is, how it works or why you need one....here's some great information that will get you up to speed (I use TORGuard and it rocks!...they keep no logs, unlimited bandwidth and no speed restrictions):
Anonymous VPN for Pilots
Trust me....it's cheap insurance!
