Valid, never lived in China and didn't consider that. The UAE sensors everything as well, but I always found my connection was significantly faster without the VPN. In the US it wasn't even close how much the VPN slowed me down.
I have a 50mbps connection with or without my VPN engaged (I use cyberghost). OTOH, I can't send email with it on (although I can receive). There are supposedly workarounds for that (ie, exceptions can be made), but I have never gotten it to work, although I admit I haven't tried very hard.
My personal workaround is to 'pause' the VPN, send email, then 'unpause' it.
