Being able to be energy independent is a game changer and none of us can imagine all the upside. Not only independent, but a major exporter.
Hundreds of billions in manufacturing moving to the U.S. for our cheap natural gas from Europe, South Africa, etc.
Exciting times.
IF we allow it to manifest though. That's the fulcrum here. We easily could of course, but there are a lot of real world big money interests, many of them among us, with a lot to lose if it happens. Just look at the roadblocks for ANWAR, the pipeline and federal land rights. What's going on in the Dakotas is a drop in the bucket compared to unleashing our full potential, but one side of the isle blocks as much as they can by any means necessary, and the other side of the isle always wants to send us to another trillion dollar unfunded war to protect the corrupt arrangements we have in the ME.
We're basically painted into a corner of false choices. Do it their way either because we "can't wait for the mushroom cloud" or because it will be the end of the environment and the animated polar bears won't have ice to hang onto. There is a lot of money and power out there that doesn't want what you pointed out to come to fruition. Lots of foreign and domestic enemies alike.
