Actually the NFL OT rules were (in my opinion) improved a couple of years ago. Rather than just simple sudden death, it goes like this:
1. If a team's first possession is a TD or safety (i.e. the defense caused the safety) then they win immediately. The thinking is that they have "earned" the victory..
I understand the rules, I just don't agree with them, especially THIS rule. The team who first gets the ball hasn't 'earned' squat, until they have STOPPED the other team from scoring when THEY get a chance.
Under this rule, they have -no chance- if the coin flip doesn't go their way and the other team scores TD on their first possession.
It's lame. Both teams should have a possession.
SEA obviously couldn't stop the Broncos with only 56 seconds and no timeouts, or they wouldn't have been tied in the first place.
