Not completely true. There was an era in which the airlines competed with ocean liners. Passengers were concerned with this "new" way to cross the oceans as opposed to what was considered the norm. So, in addition to inspiration from Naval uniforms, it was very much on the mind of airline execs to also model uniforms after civil maritime ocean liner crews.
