Heard recently that SkyWest is working on an Extended Over Water program for the 175's so they can be flown for Alaska, a 20 aircraft deal.
I'm calling BS on this.
There is no route that Alaska requires greater than 50nm from any rock in the ocean. Even anchorage to Dutch doesn't need that. Especially considering the water temps it would require a raft etc, not just simply inflatable vests like in the Carribean. The only route needing it would be SEAPDX to western Alaska and even then they would hug the coast just like they do Florida/Nassau flying from IAH.
I'm not shooting down the Alaska flying rumor, just the over water certification being tied to any of it.
