You can make the pos space booking, select your seat on united.com and then hold off getting it authorized (up to 72 hours) . That way you can get a seat tied up but not commit to deviating until the last minute.
Also, when getting crew desk to approve your deviation, have them authorize your booking during the same call.
The front end dh AND back end dh can be in the same booking.
CS no longer approves the deviation. They only put FAKE on your schedule. Now you have to call PSC to approve the deviation.

Regarding wait, don't wait, you need to weight your risks. if it is an early deviation you can book your deviation as early as possible. If it is the last flight of the day, I would rather make sure the flight is going before giving up the DH (and the hotel protection).

And they can always take away the seat you picked and move you on a PS. Last week I had a bulkhead and just before boarding I noticed I got moved to a seat further back. After asking the gate agent they said that a passenger chose to pay for the bulkhead so they moved me.
