+2 Assuming the A/P systems were properly working/engaged how could this happen???

Once the plane was back on the correct course and altitude, neither pilot disclosed the extent of the problem to air-traffic controllers, who in turn never pushed for answers.
Wouldn't ATC inquire/check current flight status, as the flight data return should have been interpreted as abnormal and/or a possible unauthorized cockpit intrusion???
