Just a wee bit of history. Germany and Japan were both highly militaristic countries beginning with Germany's invasion of France in 1870 and Japan's war with Russia in 1905. Both countries caused death and suffering throughout the beginning of the 20th century. Japan invaded most of Asia, especially China and Korea. Germany finally gave it in 1918 with an armistice while its army was still in France.

By 1945, both countries were utterly defeated, occupied and feed only be the generosity of the US people. GIs were out on "short rats" to feed Tokyo. Neither country is militaristic today, in fact, both can best be described as "idealistic pacifists". Yes, wars change people, it just takes one side to be defeated and exhausted.
