I took the day I knew I would be separating, and moved it left by however much terminal leave I would have. i.e. If you have 90 days of leave on the books, and your separation date is Dec 31 you could be sitting in new hire class 90 days prior. Obviously that's the over simplified answer but you get the point.

It's never too early to apply. I had my applications in with DAL, FedEx, etc three years out. The airlines aren't new to the military process, they'll manage when they call you in for the interview based on the date of availability you give them... but be 100% honest. Don't try and play games. Feel free to PM, and auto is for sissies.
