Yes, those are standups. They are all contained in pre-built lines that adhere to the contractual rules regarding them (no more than 3 in a row, 2 days off after 2 or more CDOs etc.). The left overs that don't fit into said lines end up in open time. CDOs cannot show up on a pilots schedule unless said pilot picks one up or selects a line preference in PBS that will assign them CDO(s) to finish a layer.
All that said, they're avoidable unless you are extremely junior, which most people aren't for more than a month or so due to all of the hiring. If you don't want to fly them, then bid reserve.
Biter - may seem strange to you guys, but that's a throwback from the NWA days. DTW has always had a lot of them, and most commuters like them. They're normally productive, and one can fly 3 of them for a complete month.
