So I've noticed something with call signs. Last names can be involved in the process.
A buddy of mine has the last name of Talley, call sign "Whacker".
Another friend has the last name of Herd , call sign "Buffalo".
I was at an airshow once and the guy doing the F-16 demo had a foreign name that sounded like "Rancheros" call sign, "Heuvos".
I read an article in the 90's that stated what you said, as well as what Rick mentioned as well. The author stated some of the funniest ones he'd seen while researching the article were "chunks" for a guy that had "issues" at UPT. Another one was "rooter". The guy dropped a watch and it happened to slip into a sewer and the guy went in for it Roto rooter style.
I like the one of one of the pilots that flew in the movie Top Gun. Last name is Seckinger and the his call sign was "Secks".
