I think we're confusing two things. They like to have different
capacities, (and
capabilities) for the specific route. They never liked, nor will they ever like, having a bunch of different
pilot training requirements. As someone else mentioned, MX training and spare parts is also an issue.
It's perfectly logical for them to want different size aircraft, but like the added benefits of common cockpits.
