From what my buddy said he was actually let go the day of the event. This gentleman was a top notch eagle check airman that was experiencing extensive head aches leading to his hospitalization, this intern was leading to very poor performance and remedial training. Obviously this condition lead to his training issues and not that he was a bad pilot.

I only bring this up because as of now his status is unknown and might need all of the 500k to get through this event. He will mostly like be out the minimum of 5 years before he can reapply for his medical.

If his family is reading this or can reach, Cobra back dating is the best and final solution for situation.

For others out there, you can get a "gap" policy for you and a family for around 170 a month. This type of coverage is only for major medical / catastrophic events, but well worth the peace of mind. and a hell of alot cheaper than back dating cobra.
