If you can, get a 'chip and PIN' card, most secure and works everywhere! Petropavlovsk to Brazzaville, Monte Carlo to Palau, it's never failed me. I carry my passport, keep the second one in the room safe. Copy is fine, but an original has your entry stamps which could be very important. But I've never been asked for one after Immigration, even at the Beijing Olympics.
