On this particular flight the coach was sold out however there were 17 seats available in business. The gate agent told me that they cannot accommodate me as I'm only listed in coach & there are no seats available. I asked if I could talk to the captain to see if he can authorize a seat in business. They called him up but told me they weren't going to stick around for his answer since they had to get the flight out.

Now in this instance what is the policy? As an offline jumpseater on an international flight can I not sit in a business class seat if coach is sold out?

However, I would like to thank the crews that have upgraded me numerous times you guys rock!
The agents processed you correctly. You can not be given a seat in United first (that is the name of that cabin on two class airplane). They have to have a seat to assign you in Y class. That is our policy. Once the door is closed the captain can put you wherever he wants but you technically need a y seat to get from gate to plane.

If they agent gave you a Firtst seat to get you on the plane they could lose their jobs.
