The reality is that allegiant management got their tails handed to them while they were trying to play "big boy airline" and getting in way over their head....You can't do Hawaii on the cheap. It takes competent support, spare aircraft and crews, quality maintenance.... I would imagine that real airlines that are still flying those routes must be laughing themselves silly right now. I know we are.
I think you hit the nail on the head, however, I don't think the other airlines that serve the islands ever considered Allegiant a real threat.
