It would only be for a year.
School is not an issue.
We like the nightlife and outdoors recreation.....

But.....will be subsisting on first year pay. So we'll probably be eating Ramen and watching Hulu. I need to be able to get to all 3 airports, as well, right?

Still, it could (should? Would?) be fun to be New Yorkers for a year.
Are you looking solely within NYC city limits? Manhattan is gonna run you 2000-3000/mo for a one bedroom apt. 3500-6000/mo for a two bedroom.

Queens is more convenient to JFK and LGA. Bayside is a decent area with lots of rentals.

If you are willing to cross bridges($$$, traffic) you may do well in NJ or White Plains. If you aren't checkout Port Jefferson or Huntington Station on LI for house rentals.

Good luck.
