Why would that be absurd? The quality of "careers" varies. Regionals don't normally have any sort of psych screening. I know of a few guys that were on the "page of shame" at my regional, and could never, ever withstand an interview with a shrink, without having their shoelaces removed, and being placed in a comfortable room, with a coloring book and nice, soft crayons.
As for the military, I would think they have more quality control. I can't speak about how a guy could be fit there, and not fit at Delta, but the job descriptions are different. The psychological makeup to be effective in a single-seat fighter might be different enough from the skillset required to make through a four-day trip without getting stabbed, that one can get legitimately flagged. On rare occasions, some "Viper" guys manage to demonstrates why.
