Thats the route I took and I will agree it is alot easier. Do the CFII with the feds then just add on the single and multi with your DPE. If you go that route then you can do the ride in a 172 as opposed to a complex. The CFII ride is just another instrument ride but from the right seat. I got lucky with my inspector, he was really easy going. He did half the flying and was really just having fun.
