Airlines don't give free alcoholic drinks in coach because they don't want to spend money on it. Plain and simple.
I'd say its a little bit off both, lets be real, the people in coach want to fly cheap yet still expect to be treated like VIP's, imagine if drinks were free with thosd kinds of people who want to pay $50RT to Vegas and then give them free alcohol, wouldnt work out.... In most countries outside the USA, they dont offer free upgrades. You get what you pay for.
