There a guys out there called "hobbyists", I believe. Either the spouse makes a good secure income, they are retired with a good pension, or operate a second business. These guys will be what the regionals will have to rely on in the future.
Knew a guy back in the '80s who was an executive VP at Proctor and Gamble and took early retirement to come to Comair to fly a Metro. He fit the hobbyist definition to a T.
He always wanted to be an "airline pilot". He was the only guy in newhire class at Comair with his own new BE-58 Baron and who drove a new S class Mercedes.
