Case in point, I'm prior 121, with an ATP and CL-65 type rating in hand the day I showed up to class. I got it done in 8, no biggie. In all honesty I probably could've passed the ride after 4, but whatever.
My partner's first language is not English. Engineering degree, and a really smart guy. Showed up to Sim with sections 4 and 7 memorized.
Instructor for Sim 1-4 was really good. Knew the POH really well, knew how to work us together as a crew, made a LOT of progress.
Instructor for Sim 5-8, while a really nice guy, was not a great instructor. Struggled with running the Sim and keeping the lessons flowing. Did not do a really good job of working us as a crew. My partner didn't learn a whole lot, and I was kinda frustrated.
I got signed off in 8, my partner was given two more lessons with a different instructor, signed off, passed the ride, and is now waiting for IOE.
The right call?
Two other people in my class were let go at 12. I don't know of any going beyond that.
I have a few sim instructor friends who have told me of people going past the 12. Of course I do not know what the circumstances were. And I know it does not happen often. I do know that a lot of it is based on the attitude of the person. Cooperate-graduate.
