In fact the hotel you exspense need not be at the city where your live leg starts,
...but if it's not, you can only layover there---24 hrs domestically or 48 hrs internationally --- while enroute to the city where your live leg begins
Additionally, your deviation expenses - air, GT or hotel - must be within 3 days of a revenue trip
