- Huge retirements coming up.
- We are now a much leaner operation.
- back then we had FEs that were slowly converting to FOs. The 9-11 event greatly accelerated the FE retirements.

I would say 1000 pilots below is a good safety cushion.

That said, never say never.

Also keep in mind that 911 was a factor in the furloughs but yields had experienced the biggest collapse in airline history in the spring of 2001. 911 became the excuse for furloughs but the driving event was the collapse in yields.
