Funny story (kind of). The first furlough recall group was July 04. I believe all those guys went into the 737-200. I bypassed until August correctly thinking I would busting my butt every July for the next 5-10 years.
In July there was an AE for 737-800s that left a lot of FO seats unfilled because most of the 737-200 were staying put thinking next month there would be 45 more guys being recalled and put in below them.
Well the August class went almost 100% to the 737-800s and instead of being at the bottom of the 737-200 list (had I went back in July) I instantly had about 40 guys below me on the 737-800.
You can bet a bunch of guys on the 737-200 were not happy.
Sometimes its better to be lucky than good.

Nice call on the -800 vs the -200, Scoop! I was in the last group of FM2 guys furloughed Jun 03 and recalled Nov 03..much shorter and easier road than the other 1310 to be sure. But I did get the complimentary 4-day requal into the 73-200 since I had flown the -800 within the previous 35 months (after being displaced from SLC 73N to DFW M88 to CVG MD88 and had flown the MD88 for the previous 18 mos)..but I was lucky to be back and thankful to fly the classic for 6 months while commuting to VA. Ave.
I agree that the current circumstances at DL are completely different than 15 yrs ago. And to think that after 9/11, RJ's, BK, $150/bbl oil, age 65, economic collapse and merger mania...I was still only furloughed for 5 months..is pretty good. I've flown with a lot of Captains who we're furloughed under Ron Allen's "leadership 7.5", had the B-scale and sat sideways for 7-10 yrs in a 727..plus seeing guys back after 10 yrs keeps things in perspective!
I can only hope the future is gonna be much smoother for our new DL bubbas going forward..
Now..if we can just get that SLC717 category going!
