It kind of depends, but they CAN ask.
I know of a specific person that has a spouse that got cancer. Multiple occasions of sick leave, FMLA, and whatever else you can think of to get time off to take care of the sick spouse.
They were grilled pretty hard about it in the interview. The fact that it was all taken to help care for a cancer stricken spouse didn't matter.
Another common question is "how many patterns have you started that you were not able to complete?"
Doesn't matter if it was due to getting sick on the pattern, or if one had to fatigue off the pattern.
Depending on where one works, even despite 117 fatiguing off a pattern at a regional ISNT uncommon.
