Before I start, I would like to say that I definitely do not condone the use of either alcohol or marijuana and moving around airplanes on the ground or in the sky. So it goes like this....I have flown with a guy that used to work at NASA, he was mainly involved in sim stuff. Some years back NASA conducted two controlled study's on both alcohol and marijuana use, using current airline pilots as the test subjects. The testing involved giving various amounts of alcohol in the first test and seeing how the pilot performed in the sim. I was told that the findings from the alcohol testing was that 2 servings of alcohol actually made the test subjects perform better than with 0 alcohol in there system. However once a 3rd serving of alcohol was given then the test subjects performed far worse. Now as far as the testing with the marijuana, he said that pilots were coming out of all sorts of woodwork to be part of the testing. The testing involved simply smoking marijuana and attempting to do our pilot stuff in the sim once again. However the finding in the marijuana testing was that, the pilots had no idea what the hell was going on in simulator. The test subjects were then given a 3 month get out of jail free card with there local wiz quiz team.
The other problem with pot detection is that it can only tell if the pot had been consumed within the last 60 days, I does not test whether or not IF the person is Actually under the influence. I'm no expert by any means but if they are going to allow the legal use of that stuff, they better find a way of testing how much influence it is having on the testee, not if it is simply in the system. But like I said in an earlier post, just wait till your 65th birthday before you want to play around with that stuff - for medicinal purposes of course
