First hint of advice, "You can't save the/any company even if you work for free."

Second, Outsourcing isn't about "saving money," its about not having to deal with the employees. Hiring a firm to do the work is proven again and again to actually cost more, but the company can hire and fire a single company when they encounter a problem and not have to deal with each individual person.

As far as the displacement for training stuff goes, it has been past UAL practice to do such and the current UAL Management chose to blatantly disregard that practice. And this attitude seems to be a common thing these days.
